January Challenge 2013: Day Eight
Jan. 8th, 2013 10:45 pm
Absolutely loved this series as a kid, my books were read so many times that the spines were completely broken. The cartoon on the other hand left much to be desired. So here's the main character, Shade Silverwing of the silver haired bat species.
If the image is too dark, please let me know and I'll fix it. My screen settings were different today, and it messed with the drawing.

Not too long ago, I was going through my older games and refound Primal. One of those rare games in which the protagonist is female and the sidekick is both useful and admirable. One aspect of the game is Jens' ability to take on four demon-like forms, the first one is this satyrish race, which is what I've drawn. Of which, if anything, I accidentally made her more feminine than how she appears in the game.
Even beyond the shape-shifting (and oh do I love me my shape-shifting) Jen is clever, strong, snarky and compassionate. And for all of you who love the reversal of tropes, one of Jens' leading drives in the game is to save her boyfriend. Her sidekick and guide is Skree, a small animated gargoyle who can climb walls and when attacked, turn to stone so as to not be injured.
Also, I'm going to make a request of my readers this time. Ever since the car thing, I've been down, and my emotions won't listen to my brain when it tells them to get over it. Not even watching a video of baby sloths getting baths did more than a temporary fix. So I'd like to hear some good news, whether it's your own ups in life or something you've heard about I'd like to hear it.

(Also, what's with the new posting set up? It's not very photobucket picture friendly. Or just posting friendly, it keeps messing everything up. I would be screwed if I didn't know some basic html.)

EDIT: Might as well as participate in that question meme going around too. So go ahead and ask me stuff, I almost never know what to say about myself otherwise.

The other pic
Dec. 28th, 2009 01:10 amGot permission.

Again, this is from
laratron's fic Lost and Found. I think I succeeded in making it look like it could be in the G1 toon. This gave me some trouble and I had to restart it a couple of times, which was/is sadly far more cooperative than the fic(s) I don't have art for. *still bothered with only getting two done* But I'm pleased with how it turned out and so is
laratron and that's all that matters. Though I have to say whoever decided that the only color the Ark would be is orange needs to be shot.

Again, this is from

Giftart for fanfic results
Dec. 26th, 2009 08:04 pmSome of you may remember the personal project I pushed forward a while back. In which I endeavored to create three high quality pictures for underappreciated fanfics. But I didn't quite make my goal of three, just two. *shamed* This month hasn't been the best, blah is a good description, and unfortunately it impacted my artistic drive in a negative way. I can't count the number of times I'd pulled up one of these to work on only to end up staring blankly at the screen.
Of the pics I did finish; Lost and Found by
laratron , and Intersection by
azardarkstar were selected from a list of four.
Azar was kind enough to permit me to post the one I did for their story. While I asked a number of people to help with collecting fanfics, the art is for the writer and I wanted to give them the option of sharing it or not. Once I get a reply from laratron, we'll see if the other goes up.

This was an enjoyable challenge, I don't draw movieverse that often (mostly because I haven't organized a suitable reference folder yet), and until now I hadn't even so much as sketched Bumblebee. The dark bot is Sam, who in this fic was changed via Allspark shard. So coming up with what he would look like and making sure he appeared like he could be canon designed was also a challenge, but one I enjoyed. I have no idea how many hours this took.
I hope everyone's had a good month, I'm catching up on replies and posts. So there's going to be some older stuff brought up as I finally have the energy to socialize again. And my hiatus is meeting an abrupt end, I'm doing my January challenge again. Though I think I'm going to need bunnies chucked at my head early this year, there's still some lingering art block I need to break through.
*gets to working through their messages* *is thankful there's not many*

A Late Halloween Pic
Nov. 2nd, 2009 05:06 amTwo posts today cause I forgot to put this with the other one. And the reason it's late is that I was busy writing serial killer fic and could afford to put drawing on hold as my writing muse was actually cooperative for once.

'09 Holiday Giftart Rules
Aug. 1st, 2009 08:23 pmA little while back I brought up a giftart for underapreciated fanfics proposal. There was some interest but no fics were sent my way, and I figure that I'll put it in it's own journal along with a few rules I'm using. There's not that many, and it's really more of a "Q & A" than anything else.
What you do is find a fanfic or fanfic writer that you feel deserves fanart for that wonderful story that doesn't seem to get any attention from their fandom at all, you send it my way and then there's the chance that it'll happen.
The deadline for sending fics is October 1st. This is to give me time to read all the fics, to actually pick which ones I'm going to do, and finally to draw them. Because I know how I think, the earlier you can get the fics to me the more likely I'll choose one of yours, as I'll read them as I get 'em and the more they sit in my brainspace the more likely it'll stick.
My goal is to complete three pictures of high quality, and maybe, maybe some simple ones for the others if I have the time. Examples of the high quality kind include this, this, and this.
( The Rules: Don't worry, there's only seven. Five of which are more like questions than rules. )
I think that's it, if there's any other questions feel free to ask since I have the feeling I may have forgotten a thing or two. If there's a fic you want to nominate but you feel is not quite allowed thanks to every rule but Number 2 you can still ask. Also, if you want to remain anonymous for the gift receiver go ahead and PM me. (I haven't figured out how to do the anon comments thing yet)
ETA: If a list is being made or some time is needed, I can add a few days. *really wants at least three fics to work on*

Double post
Jul. 27th, 2009 04:11 amFor those not the least bit interested in OC's, I've been playing around with another art program I just found. SAI is both similar and different than OpenCanvas, it has a better blur tool for example while their variety of brushes is not as easy to figure out. The first two pictures are a bit inaccurate, I didn't bother looking for references at the time. (nitpicky artist is very nitpicky)
( Four Pics. )
I've fallen behind on replies. That will be corrected.

Warning: Brain Breakage Ahead
Jun. 26th, 2009 03:43 am*making everything ambiguous because even after the four-plus-hours it took to do this, it still scares me*
You can blame this picture on
puffitheinsane with her singular art bunny which goes hand in hand with this music video. Which was one vicious bugger as it wouldn't leave me be until I finished it (I swear, it didn't just bite me, it fragging ATE me). So thanks, I'm up this late because of you. Not that I wouldn't have been anyway with the humidity and heat we have here. And I can't even tell if I broke my own brain or not. I think I did, but it doesn't feel like it. Mostly because I'm ridiculously proud with how the shirt and the coloring came out.
( I'm not going to apologize, because it won't undo what I've done. )
Also, I just left the boombox as a regular boombox since I've already traumatized Megatron, and I couldn't bear subjugating another mech to this.
And I can't believe it's Friday already, what the hell happened to the week?!

Just a new icon
Jan. 9th, 2009 06:50 pmA little small something today instead of the usual, as I feel that I'm risking a burnout otherwise. Things will return to normal tomorrow. And I've been dying to find a place to use this insult for ages, and while geology isn't quite paleontology the two are tightly linked in Earth study. So I now have a pissed off icon with my own little insult. I realize it's probably a bit OOC for him to be insulting someone but everyone gets ticked off sooner or later and an obscure reference in relation to his field of study sounds like something he might use.
If you know what a coprolite is, he probably isn't talking to you.
Talin loves you like some people love a good steak.
The 'little' worm wanted as icon as well. And who am I to deny a bladed parasite with a body length of five feet, not counting a rather long tail?

Jan. 6th, 2009 11:46 pmThe great thing about getting the last one done so early is that it gave me nearly two days to work on this one. And while that really wasn't enough time, it had to do. Bunny number 2 from here.
Would you believe Screamers' face took me longer to do than all the hands combined? Hands are easy (it probably only took a minute or two tops to do Soundwaves') so are feet, I enjoy doing them. Faces? Fragging HARD to do, Starscream I wouldn't be surprised if it had taken a whole hour and I'm still not happy with it. I'm starting to hate drawing him solely for this reason, as the last time also took a rediculous amount of time as well . Probably why Soundwave looks the best, no face to really speak of.
An artists tip for you all. Try to avoid using straight black or white in your coloring. It just adds a little something more if there's a little bit of color in there. As the dynamics of light rarely ever have something appear pure black or pure white.
( Forgot the cut AGAIN. )
Any mistakes you see or lack of certain details, I blame on my time restriction. But I am pleased, as it did force me to work faster than what's my usual comfort zone. *goes to work on tomorrows piece*

A new year begins
Jan. 1st, 2009 02:46 amBut things are still the same.
Anyway, as part of my determination to get better as an artist I'm going to post at minimum one piece of art every day for the month of January. Hopefully this will help with my perfectionist tendencies by forcing me to not spend as much time as I'd like on a picture. So feel free to play art!bunny dodgeball with my head if my ideas seem to be dying.
So to start, here's an older pic I just brushed up. Done when I was still figuring out how to draw transformers, it's not something I feel will ever be finished unless I start over again. Which I may or may not do. The whole thing came about when I was pondering the time that will come for any OC when they're accused of Mary-sueness, and how that label affects all original characters. Wardrum cheerfully volunteered to be the featured mech.

Titanium moosebots have ailerons
Dec. 28th, 2008 04:09 pmYou can blame these on
heslestor . Apparently she's my own personal transformers bunny farm, I've gotten more ideas put in my head from her lately than the actual comm.

Dec. 15th, 2008 12:00 amBecause. One, there's no official art for one of these. And two, I didn't like any of the vary few fanarts of them I could find.
( And I still can't decide if one small picture is worth the cut. )
I'm getting better at metal. Yes I am.
Life lesson number one: Three weeks of fighting insomnia can really mess with your head. And that if you have to go to a public place, make sure you have someone with you who will make sure you don't run into strollers. Even if those strollers have a large, bright red pole attached to them to announce that there's a kid there. It doesn't matter if you are a master of evasion and crowded area route planning, you will need someone to grab your elbow.

Dec. 7th, 2008 03:35 am( "You're a lovely little parasite. Yes you are." )
Somebody shoot me. I've got other people's fancharas hijacking my brain.
heslestor's questionable Autobot, Hotzone. A Toxicologist and Pathologist whose ethics don't quite match up to the Autobot ideal, and if you kill him it's very likely that all the chemicals he's carrying around would make the surrounding area for miles a dead zone. Recent conversation had him cooing over a parasite of his own creation, and this image promptly burned itself into my brain along with the name Talin for the parasite. Which, like other made up words that hit me, turned out to be not-so-made-up. In this case, there's two. *exasperated*
Before, I'd offered to draw Hotzone because I like him so much and actually had a different one in progress. But nooooo, the pathologist wanted his parasite-in-a-vial. *sulk* It's really not fair when I'm struggling to get my own characters down and visualized. But hey, I'm glad it's one I could finish, there's not been many of those lately. And I hope you like this Heslestor, he was fun to design.
And if anyone knows where I can find some good tips on doing metal that's colored, I'd be very grateful.
