What's really creepy is that nine times out of ten, something I design is more perfect than I ever initially realize. Once, I created a free-floating underwater station for a sci-fi water planet story with these unusual looking long pipe things extending up to the surface all the way down to the dark deep. I later found out that the structure actually exists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_thermal_energy_conversion) as an energy generator, matching the use I had for them in my head.
