Thanks to a recent article on [livejournal.com profile] wtf_nature I was reminded of an old character I have. Soog is a goose barnacle merperson. (Get it? Soog, Goose? I'm so uncreative. :\) And I say merperson, because neither mermaid nor merman would work. Seeing as barnacles are hermaphrodites, that's right, they have both complete sets of parts. And yes, I did put that in my character. But anyway, the whole point of their post was on the unusual kinds of sex found throughout the world. I'm actually kinda of a prude, but this was too good to pass up.

I had a dream last night that involved trying to figure out how a rain wall affects boats. And by a rain wall I mean just a single sheet of rain falling in a line. Catching a 3 1/2 ft long swordfish that was attacking my sister, barehanded, in the lake I grew up by (though it was also the sea). Walking up the hill to my old house with the fish, because dude, I just caught a swordfish barehanded. Entered the house, got on an elevator, somehow loose the fish and not care a whit.

At the top, it was all ruins. With little colored symbols in strategic places ala video game style, that for some reason only I could see since none of the people who studied the place before didn't know they existed. I was being an idiot and pressing as many as I could even when it destroyed stuff, the curiosity of what would happen the only thing I knew even when it became extremely dangerous. Course my luck ran out and I fell through the floor after pressing one symbol that opened up the floor. Had tea with a giant spider who turned out to be a not!Blackarachnia, after watching eggs grow which confused the hell out of the bird trying to tend to them after it had dug the eggs out of the ground. Then later fought not!Blackarachnia and not!Tarantulas on a small alter like stepp pyramid with openings that released dinosaurs. And finially I saved the world with chemistry in the form of magic and giant atoms and chemical equations.

...I've forgotten how interesting my dreams get when I'm really depressed. I was at the opening of an art show yesterday I'm participating in, and my mood just dropped to the ground when walking through the door.

Very good. Interestingly, parasitic barnacles *aren't* hermaphrodites. It's quite peculiar.

They aren't? I was so sure that Lepas anatifera was. Well damn... *searches internet* No, no, I was right. If you don't mind a pdf link, here's a paper (http://www.biolbull.org/cgi/reprint/68/2/263.pdf) whose focus is that particular goose barnacle and it's status as a hermaphrodite.

Sorry, I didn't mean that goose barnacles were diecious - because goose barnacles aren't parasitic. I was talking about other barnacles
